What are sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs)?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), refer to several different conditions that are passed from one person to another, typically through sexual contact. STDs can be contracted through unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex. STDs can also be passed by sharing needles.

STD symptoms

Symptoms of STDs can vary depending on the specific illness. Common symptoms can include:

  • A burning or painful sensation while urinating
  • Rashes, bumps or sores in the genital or buttock area
  • Itching, swelling or pain in the vagina, penis or anus
  • Unusual discharge from the genitals
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes or body aches

While the above symptoms can impact anyone, specific symptoms for men and women can differ. STD symptoms for women can include pain during sex or bleeding from the vagina. STD symptoms for men can include tender or swollen testicles.

Many of these symptoms can be caused by other illnesses as well. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to get an STD screening to determine the best treatment for you.

STD Testing and screening

At GoHealth Urgent Care we can test for most STDs. Your STD screening begins with a confidential virtual or in-center visit.

STD testing can vary depending on the type of condition you might have. Additionally, based on other information you share, a provider may recommend an STD test even if you are not experiencing symptoms.

Some STDs require a blood test, a urine culture or a swab of the area that is then sent out to the lab. Other STDs, like herpes or genital warts, can sometimes be evaluated and diagnosed with only a physical exam.

We do not offer Pap smears or HPV testing, but we can connect you with an in-network provider who can help.

STD prevention and treatment options

The type of treatment you receive for an STD depends on the symptoms and diagnosis.

Infections like chlamydia or syphilis can all be treated with antibiotics. While UTIs, yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are not STDs, they can be associated with sexual intercourse, and can also be treated with antibiotics. Other STDs, like HIV, herpes or human papillomavirus (HPV), are not curable. Instead, the treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and complications related to the illness.

The best way to avoid STDs is through prevention. The only foolproof preventive measure is abstinence. However, if you are, or plan to be, sexually active, there are many ways to make sex safer for you and your partner. Before having sex, it is important to discuss your sexual history and ask your partner if they have been screened for STDs.

Condoms or dental dams are great contraceptive options. While the two are not 100% effective, they are among the best ways to reduce the risk of STD transmission during sex. Regular STD screening can also help prevent spreading infections to your partner(s) and lower the risk of further complications. If you are in a monogamous relationship, there is no further spontaneous risk after being screened for STDs. Speak to your provider via a virtual or in-person visit about the best ways to prevent STDs.
